U.S.K.A

SUPERMAN COMPETITION

September the 5th saw the long awaited U.S.K.A. Superman competition finally take place and after two postponements the anticipation for this tough but fun day was as always very keen. The concept is simple 10 grueling fitness tests designed to find the clubs ultimate fitness guru, in an event which pits boy against girl man against woman and each against themselves. Whilst the event is very much about personal targets the competition is always fierce for the title of U.S.K.A Superman
The event is not confined to just U.S.K.A. kickboxing members, more-over the clubs open door policey is indeed extended to this event. The fact is you don't have to be a superman to enter but you do have to wanna be one to win it.

This event was started with the squat thrust time test over 30 seconds followed by the speed sit up contest, with the contestants spilt into four appropriate sections pewee two intermediate groups and an adult group ensuring the event allows equal competition across the spectrum of contestants. Event three was the line jumps bringing into the equation agility and slight of step the intermediate and adult version of this exercise being the over and under line jump involving contestants passing under and over a skipping rope held just below waist height. this test is defiantly down to technique with jumps that touch the rope not being counted. The forth test was the standing jump again requiring good technique and agility, the tall and light defiantly being at an advantage for this one, however these test are designed to give all contestants an equal footing and chance to win with other discipline being more strength and power orientated. By this time in the 12 to 14 yr group the irrepressible Azad Khan had taken a firm lead in his group and the four time winner was not going to relinquish is crown easily.

Event five defiantly favored the strong being the ever dreaded ski squat, this exercise requires contestants to sit in a squat position as if on a chair with their backs against the wall . Last man up wins and winner of the peewee section this year was Cormac Hannon who showed sheer will power to out do his fellow competitors. Strong resolve for one so young. Next up was the two mat sprint and thats not funny when you have just taken part in the ski sqat test. The number of times you complete a two mat length of sprint is added up to give an overall total, of course as many as possible being the target.

Test 7 is dead man falls the idea being for the jnrs to take a running jump over thai pads pilled on top of each other the more pads you clears the higher your score spring of step being the key to this one.The adult and intermediate version of this exercise is somewhat more akin to it's name and demanding to say the least it consists of a star jump to a lying prostrate position to count as one mark then on making second jump the fall is on to your back i.e. dead man falls and when your finished this stiff test that is exactly how you feel.

Exercise 8 is kick boxing with the amount of punches performed on a pad being counted over 30 seconds and the boxers get their advantage on this one. With just two events remaining the competitors were feeling the pace at this stage but with shuttle sprints and shuttle swims to come only the strong would carry any chance of becoming the overall champion supreme, now it was a test of character as well. Test nine was against the clock counting completed sprints from marks on the floor getting increasingly further from the start point. Not for the weak of mind or body now it was a case of those with stanima coming to the fore The last and probably the most tiresome was the shuttle swims, no mean task on it's own least of all after the other nine events, still only strong survive and prevail. For the contestants it time to take that hard earned rest assured in the satisfaction of having completed a very tough regime and indeed finish and they did one and all.

But now it was time to find out just who was Superman Supreme with the results being announced in time honored tradition of peewee first through to the adult section but one thing was for sure there are no losers on this day to finish this set of exercises is an achievement in itself reward in this case with everyone receiving a trophy for their efforts. after all everyone had pushed themselves to beat there own best times and results.
The scoring is done by simply amassing the highest points total ,with 5 points going to the winner of each section through to 1 point being gained by the fifth place competitor for all groups, and this years results were as follows.
