MAGB
LIGHT CONTINUOUS COMPETITION 5th FEBRUARY
2006

On the 5th February the promotional group MAGB hosted the latest
of their light continuous events at the Emerald Social club in Small
Heath Birmingham.
Although a relatively quiet turn out for the first competition of
the year as always it was a case of quality put before quantity with
a day of excellent contests with everyone in attendance without exception
enjoying the bouts of the day.
What has really been highlighted over the last 6 months or so is the
rise in standard of light continuous competition that has risen the
bar and has pushed all involved with the sport to raise their game.
All the bouts of the day were contested under the eyes of quality
MAGB referee Big Dave Bignell with competitors performing out of their
skin to the excellent support from their clubs spectators adding to
the atmosphere of the day.
Below is a break down of all the U.S.K.A performances and results.
Hakeem Farooq USKA Vs
Joshua Malin BMAC
Round one saw a slow start for Hakeem, on the defensive and being
pushed back.
The confidence did not seem to be there and he was on the receiving
end of the punishment for most of the round.
Round two, after receiving instructions from his corner men Hakeem
woke up a little to press some action of his own, flurrying with his
hands and finishing with nice straight leg kicks to the body. Hakeem
gets the best of the round to even things up on the scorecard.
Round three with it all to fight for sees Hakeem going forward and
growing in confidence with the more success he is having.
The round finishes being again scored to the USKA fighter. Two rounds
to one sees the victory awarded to the.............
Winner: Hakeem Farooq USKA
Mark Sedgwick USKA
Vs Romaine Porter YING YANG
Round one has Mark fighting well at range. Hitting and moving not
allowing Romaine to land cleanly. Nearing the end of the round Mark
scores with some nice head kicks to make sure beyond doubt that he
has the round in the bag.
Round two, Mark negates Romaine's pressure with good lateral movement.
Setting himself Mark lands some very impressive multiple kick combinations
and starts to overwhelm his man just as the bell sounds to end the
round.
Round three sees Mark continue where he left off in the previous round.
Scoring well but showing very good control in his technique.
The bell sounds again with the round going to Mark.
No doubt about the winner of this one.
Winner: Mark Sedgwick USKA

Mark Sedgwick with a chopping Axe kick onto Romaine porter

And the winner is 'MIGHTY Mark Sedgwick'
Noor Muhammad USKA
Vs Joe Dadson SOLIHULL KICKBOXING ACADEMY
Round one, An aggressive start from Solihull Kickboxing Academy's
Joe Dadson pushes Noor back. Although coming forward like a buzz saw
he seemed to be neglecting his kicks and relying on his punch combinations.
Noor starts to find his range with his legs near to the end of the
round. A tough round to score probably leaves it being scored even.
Round two, Again Joe starts strong but mid way through the round starts
to tire leaving a gap for Noor to start letting go with some impressive
kick combinations including a well timed side kick to the face. Noor's
round!
Round three, Noor on the instruction of the corner is the aggressor
now and his opponents work rate has slowed right down under the pressure.
The fight ends with the decision going to Noor for the clean kicks
that scored.
Winner: Noor Muhammad USKA

Noor Muhammad kicks out at Solihull Kickboxing Academy's
Joe Dadson

Noor Muhammad makes it three out of three for USKA
Haris Khan USKA Vs Josh
Spencer JESTERS
Round one sees Josh Spencer the taller of the two fighters getting
his kicks off well. Harris although ploughing forward is fighting
with his face a bit and coming off second in the exchanges.
Round two, Again Harris goes forward but pays very little attention
to his defence getting caught cleanly on the way. Josh at this point
seems to be breaking away on the score card with two rounds gone.
Round three, Harris is running out of ideas against the tall Spencer
now. but relentlessly continues to push forward to see out the round.
Three rounds to nothing sees the decision awarded to..................
Winner: Josh Spencer JESTERS
Haroon Khan USKA Vs
Mitchell Redmond SOLIHULL
KICKBOXING ACADEMY
Time for cousin Haroon Khan now to get USKA back on a winning track.
Round one and Haroon presses forward keeping his opponent busy with
volume of technique.
Round two sees opponent Mitchell Redmond push back now and stand his
ground a little more. Nearer to the end of this round Mitchell starts
to tire and again Haroon comes on strong to finish the round well.
Round three and Haroon is looking the stronger of the two now keeping
his opponents back against the ropes and controlling the centre of
the ring.
The well deserved winner............
Winner: Haroon Khan USKA
Haroon Khan gets the nod from Referee Big Dave Bignell
Demonstration bout
Stacey Richards USKA Vs Emily Aston USKA
The USKA girls show good variety in technique and a nice gel of styles
to give the appreciative audience and excellent display of USKA light
continuous technique.
Usmaan Ali USKA Vs Keiron
Mitchell YING YANG
Round one and showing true Ying Yang aggression Keiron Mitchell starts
the bout with good pressure attack leaving Usmaan having to fighter
the counter fight. The slightly better legs of Usmaan leave the round
finishing close probably even a draw.
Round two and Usmaan is not so willing to give up ground and decides
instead to fight fire with fire again scoring the better of the two
with his kicks.
Round three has Keiron fight the same way as he has done the previous
two rounds, still being aggressive and dangerous but scoring less
and less for his efforts.
Usmaan again is scoring well with his kicks and standing his ground
trading punches when he needs to.
The end of the bout sees referee Big Dave Bignell award the decision
to Usmaan on the head kicks scored over the three rounds.
Winner: Usmaan Ali USKA

A comfortable win for Usmaan Ali over Ying Yang's Keiron
Mitchell
Reiss Larvin USKA Vs Steven
Lamb BANTON TAE-KWON-DO
The pattern for this bout was set in the first couple of seconds
of Round one with Reiss landing a fast lead leg round kick to the
head and Steven looking awkward and defensively quite weak.
On the instruction of his corner Steven was trying to get close only
to be spun off by Reiss and countered with a hurtful straight leg
to the pit of the stomach.
By now looking out of his depth Steven was moving forward with his
hands low trying to close the gap between himself and Reiss. The inevitable
was going to happen as Reiss landed a head kick that sent Steven crashing
to the canvas.
As the medics attended to Steven it was clear that he was in no position
to continue and the fight was called to a halt.
The referee ruled that it was not so much excess power off Reiss but
a lack of defence from Steven that caused the stoppage and as a result
the winner by first round TKO went to.........
Winner: Reiss Larvin USKA
Sarah Lawrence USKA Vs
Natalie Tipton IMA
There was no easy debut for Sarah, matched against a girl who was
10kg heavier and had had 5 fights experience next to her none.
Sarah however was not daunted in the slightest and was ready and eager
to see if all her hard training was about to pay off.
Round one and Sarah was quick of the mark moving forward with one
/ two punch combinations and finishing with left leg straight legs
to the body. This was proving to be a good tactic moving Natalie backward
would not allow her to use her 10kg weight advantage.
Round two saw an even more confident Sarah press the action. The body
kicks were now taking their toll on Natalie and Sarah's forward momentum
was comfortably winning her the rounds.
Round three, early in the round now and again Natalie is hurt to the
body. the winning formula has now been set in stone by Sarah and she
was not going to let Natalie of the hook.
Totally on top now Sarah finished the round strong to get her first
ring fight out of the way winning a decision that was never in any
doubt.
Winner: Sarah
Lawrence USKA

Sarah Lawrence pulls no punches in her bout with Imperial's
Natalie Tipton

A successful ring debut for the USKA's Sarah Lawrence 1 -
0 and hungry for more!
Murdock Kellyman USKA Vs Chris
Slinger BANTON TAE-KWON-DO
Time now for Murdock Kellyman who had not competed in a bout for
best part of two years. He had looked good against Aaron Robinson
in a demo in Newark two weeks previous but how would he cope in his
first real bout back and his first bout ever in senior competition.
All was about to be revealed.
Round one and a composed Murdock was cooping well with the forward
attacks from Chris Slinger. Working well on the counter attack and
picking his shots with good accuracy Murdock looked very much in control.
A double jab followed by a right straight leg to the body doubled
up Chris with Ref Big Dave stepping in to allow him time to recover.
End of the first round with Murdock on top.
Round two, Murdock showing excellent ring craft now as you could visibly
see him shake off his ring rust.
More fluent now and opening up with good variety in his combinations
Murdock was now in his element.
Another round to the USKA fighter and the feeling that Chris was sinking
more and more out of his depth.
Round three saw Murdock at his best yet. Moving through the gears
making no mistakes and hitting Chris at will.
An axe kick catches Chris on the top of the head and again Big Dave
has to step in to enforce a rest.
The action resumes but the bell cannot come quick enough for Chris
because unluckily for him he has met Murdock in the sharpest of form.
Three unanimous rounds to nothing are scored to.......................
Winner: Murdock Kellyman USKA

Murdock lands the axe kick onto an overwhelmed Chris Slinger

All bases covered with Murdock on the defence

No doubt about the winner in this one and a successful ring
return.
Demonstration bout
Jay Collett USKA Vs Mitchell
Coleman SOLIHULL KICKBOXING ACADEMY
In a demonstration bout Jay 'SUGAR FOOT' Collett was matched against
Solihull Kickboxing academy's Mitchell Coleman. It was to be Mitchell's
first ring fight and it would give Jay plenty of chance to work on
new things bearing in mind he has a tough fight coming up on March
4th against the very talented Ben Taylor from derby.
Both lads showed good technique throughout the bout with Jay working
on standing his ground and not being forced back.
This was a performance by Jay that earned him credit and appraisal
from all in attendance and even caught the eye of one of Britain's
top promoters Colin Payne from the TKO Kickboxing academy. Who knows,
maybe in years to come Jay might feature in one of Colin's main event
Jake Richards USKA Vs
Nicky Singh IMA
Time now for a bout that was on paper a very good fight between two
rising prospects.
The very fast hands of Nicky Singh matched against the cleaner technique
and superior kicking of Jake Richards.
This coupled with good sustained forward momentum from Jake was enough
to take round one on the score cards.
Round two came to an abrupt end when in an exchange Nicky Singh signalled
to the referee that he was experiencing difficulty seeing through
one of his eyes.
It is unknown if it was a kick or a punch that had done the damage
but due to the fact that he was in trouble Ref Dave Bignall waved
the fight over and awarded the decision to Jake Richards.
This is a bout that would make a good rematch somewhere in the future
between the two very good technicians.
Winner: Jake Richards USKA

Jake Richards in another strong performance against Nicky
Singh
Demonstration bout
Stacey Richards USKA Vs
Atlanta Smith SOLIHULL KICKBOXING ACADEMY
Stacey kindly stepped in to take part in a demonstration bout against
ring debutante Atlanta Smith from Solihull Kickboxing Academy.
Using good defence against Atlanta's relentless attack Stacey showed
she can fight more than one style and treated the spectators to a
good demonstration.
Demonstration bout
Usmaan Ali USKA Vs
Ian Goodall BMAC
Another demonstration this time for Usmaan Ali against the very experienced
BMAC fighter Ian 'GIZMO' Goodall. The point of this exercise was to
get Usmaan used to coping with forward pressure and aggression. This
is something that Gizmo has in abundance.
Usmaan was told he needed to apply some forward pressure of his own
to put Gizmo on the back foot. This is something he did very well
over the three rounds and at no point looked overwhelmed or out of
his depth. This was a good learning experience for Usmaan and proved
that demonstrations have there place in a fighters development when
a suitable match cannot be found.
Demonstration bout
Jake Richards USKA Vs Tom
Carroll SOLIHULL KICKBOXING ACADEMY
Jake up now for his second ring walk of the day this time matched
in a demonstration bout against Solihull Kickboxing Academy's Tom
Carroll. Tom visits the USKA academy on a regular basis and has sparred
Jake in the passed so they were no stranger to each other style wise.
Both lads demonstrated a good level of technique and skill and showed
exactly what a demonstration bout should be like.
Maybe one day they can meet in a competitive match and pull out all
the stops in an attempt to get a win over each other.
Demonstration bout
Haroon Khan USKA Vs Marshall
Willock BMAC
Haroon Khan also kindly agreed to pad up once again to do a demonstration
with Marshall Willock from BMAC. Marshall at only 6 years old could
not get a match but still wanted to strut his stuff in the ring in
a demonstration.
Credit to both guys on a good display and demonstration of skill with
the best of sportsmanship on show.
Demonstration bout
Noor Muhammad USKA Vs Logan
Willock BMAC
Last but by no means least we had Noor Muhammad jump back through
the ropes to touch them up with 4 year old Logan Willock again from
BMAC.
The youngest and most ferocious of the Willock family along side Noor
gave the Emerald crowd an excellent and hilarious display showcasing
the skills of what has to be one of the sports future super stars.
Well done to both lads for finishing the days events with a great
show.
It's a tough one to call for me for fighter of the day after so many
memorable performances so i'll give the shared award to all of the
following.
Sarah Lawrence: excellent debut, strong performance
and showed she's got what it takes to have good success on the light
continuous circuit.
Jay Collett: Only a demo but i think the penny dropped
big time for him on certain aspects of his style and things at last
seem to have fallen into place.
Usmaan Ali: Much the same as Jay tried different
things that seemed to pay off for him.
For me probably out of everyone the best performance of the day against
strong experienced competition.
Mark Sedgwick: Good performance again against good
competition with that U.S.K.A style now starting to show through in
Mark's fight.
Murdock Kellyman: It's been a long time since Murdock
last took part in a competitive fight and he showed to me that he
has turned from a boy to a man in a very strong yet controlled performance
showing very good variety in technique.
In closing MAGB director Dawn Willock had the following to say in
appreciation of the USKA teams efforts:
'Congratulations to all the competitors from USKA at the day show.
particularly would like to highlight the sportsmanship and talent
displayed, would like to agree with Neil on the highlights he made.
Murdock was commented on greatly throughout the day, hope your back
to stay!
apart from the technical ability, i am particularly impressed with
the control & discipline, USKA stepped in for several demo's encouraging
other fighters by making their fights safe & enjoyable.
many thanks'. MAGB
The USKA team finished the day with 9
Wins 1 Loss
and 8 Demonstrations
