MAGB EMERALD FIGHT NIGHT
SUNDAY 11th FEBRUARY 2007

It looked like a new direction for the MAGB promotional team when the latest of their fight nights was announced for February 11th. Same venue of the Emerald club in Small Heath Birmingham but a Pro element to the card featuring the number one 67kg fighter in the country Nick Gill taking on the battle hardened ring veteran Martin Lamb and Pro debuts for BMAC's Rob 'Diesel' Stevens and Sam Lawlor against seasoned professional opposition.
Still holding it down for the amateur side we saw two British titles up for grabs, The first a women's bout featuring the very talented Vicky Ranson matched up against Vicky Rae and from an USKA perspective a top of the bill fight British title fight between Qasim 'the Dream' Nisar against Galway fighter Sean Comiskey.
All this along side a terrific under card of amateur bouts to surely impress the crowd.

First up for the USKA team was Qasim 'Terminator' Ali in a match made at 85kg against BMAC homeboy Lee Beech. This is the first time that a home USKA fighter had fought a home BMAC fighter on an Emerald card and the room was highly charged with rapturous support for both warriors as they made their way to the ring.
There seemed to be an air of nervousness between the two probably brought on by the very loud reception from the crowd.

Qasim and Lee eyeball to eyeball

Ding Ding! Round 1 The two fighters meet head on and it is Qasim who lands first taking Lee off his feet with a push kick to the mid section. This was probably more down to Lee trying to find his feet and keeping his balance than anything else.
Both lads are exchanging round kicks to the body but there is a definite feeling that Qasim's kicks are carrying the more power of the two.
Lee is applying alot of lateral movement around the outskirts of the ring which was in total contrast to the methodical plodding forward of Qasim.
Qasim seems to be landing heavy with his straight punches and hard round kicks whereas Lee is opting to throw faster shots trying to use hit and move tactics.
All of a sudden the momentum changes with Lee from a southpaw stance landing two hard straight left rocking Qasim's head right back.
Although not hurt in Amateur rules the referee will step in and administer a standing eight count if he deemed a substantial shot has landed and troubled a fighter.
Qasim's eyes look clear and he signals to referee Bellgrave that he is ready to continue.
The fight resumes and after a quick adjustment of Qasim's loose headguard in true Terminator style he goes straight back into the mix in an attempt to get his own back and finish the round strong.
The round ends 10 second after that with Qasim landing a nice right hand on the bell that jolts the head of Lee and lets him know that he is still very much in the fight.
One round down and one that the USKA corner had to assume had been scored 10 / 8 to the BMAC fighter due to the standing eight count.
Qasim would need to win the next two rounds for a draw or knock his man down or out to look for a win. Tense times in the USKA corner.

An exchange of kicks in round 1

Ding Ding! Round 2 and both fighters again are looking to make their impression felt. Lee is still applying good movement but is standing his ground more than the first round in an attempt to find those power straight punches again.
This round so far looks intense and both fighters are looking to do damage with the shots they are throwing.
A hard long straight left jab catches Lee on the nose as he moves in and instantly blood starts to pour and covers his face. Qasim looks to be getting the better of the argument in this round and Lee seems to be feeling his power.
Lee is moving first jumping in from the outside but Qasim is intercepting his movement hitting him with straight punches on the way in.
Lee's hand are quite low now and he pays the price getting caught with a solid right hand connect on the side of the head that for a moment had the USKA crowd wondering if Qas was at last beginning to break through. Lee in his credit took the punch well and tied up Qasim in order not to get caught with another heavy shot and give him time to clear his head.
Qasim seems happy to play the counter fight now, waiting for Lee to jump in and as he does hitting him with hard straight punches.
The round ends and a good round for Qasim that we feel he has done enough to win.
He would need another good one in the third and final round if he is to salvage a draw after his standing count in the first round.

Qasim showing he's more than just a pretty banger in round 2

Ding Ding! Round 3 And it's off with a bang, both men powering in rear leg round kicks to the others body. It is Qasim however that capitalises on it landing a volley of straight left / right punches after the kick to force Lee back and for a moment look unorganised and under pressure.
Sensing the urgency of the situation Qasim is all out on the aggression now and although Lee is scoring stealing shots on the move it looks like Qasim's shots are having more effect.
As the round goes on although both throwing about the same amount it is Qasim who is landing more but Lee to his credit is unfazed and still throwing unwilling to concede an inch.
Again the action is halted by Qasim's loose headguard which was quickly dealt with by the USKA corner.
Both fighters start again and meet each other head on with Lee losing his footing after an attempted kick. Gloves dusted down they charge again this time with Qasim catching Lee with a right leg kick to the face.
It is Qasim who is getting the better of the argument now in what is looking to be his best round of the fight.
Both men trade off punches for the remaining ten or so seconds as the final bell sounds to end this truly epic novice clash.

Lee's nose badly bloodied in the war of wills

Both fighters embrace and congratulate each other on a hard fought contest.
The MC also extends his congratulations to the fighters and the crowd show their appreciation as the result is read out.
A majority decision to Lee Beech is announced leaving Qasim with the first loss on his ledger.
The crowd were split in their opinion of the result but one thing is for sure, it was a great fight and will make a good rematch somewhere down the line.
Well done to both fighters for putting on a great display of heart and true grit.

Qasim disappointed and Lee jubilant in this close local derby decision

The stage was set now for probably the most eagerly anticipated fight of the night with unbeaten Birmingham fan favourite Qasim 'The Dream' Nisar taking on another unbeaten fighter in the form of Galway's Black Dragon gym fighter Sean Comiskey to contest the I.S.K.A Super Lightweight British Amateur Full Contact championship.
Both camps were very confident in the ability of their fighters and why wouldn't they be. Qasim brought with him an unbeaten light continuous career that had seen him win 3 versions of the British title and 2 versions of the European title then moved to full contact where he has remained unbeaten winning all 15 of his fights with 11 by KO. The British title he was attempting to win would be the 4th full contact title belt he would try to add to his collection after winning the Midland, English and Golden Belt titles last year.
Sean himself was no slouch, unbeaten in 7 full contact fights and number one contender for the Irish title he also had an extensive amateur boxing career of 35 fights. The word was from the Irish camp before the contest that Sean had never ever been trouble in any of his contests and had not come to England to make up numbers, He wanted that belt strapped around his waist on the flight back home.
After an exciting undercard of fights the Emerald club crowd were poised and excited about the clash of these two perspective champions colliding.
It was Sean first to the ring with his experienced and well travelled cornerman Pete Foley.
The confident Galway man bounced around the ring getting his footing and showed no sign of nerves or discomfort being the away fighter.
Second in and to an amazing reception was Qasim 'The Dream' Nisar to the familiar 'Champ Is Here' drum beat soundtrack that his fans now know as his signature.
Qasim too showed no nerves and the fact that this 17 year old star was facing someone 11 years his senior did not seem to faze him in the slightest.
Both fighters called to the centre of the ring for final instructions from referee Mike Bellgrave it was evident that Qasim had the height advantage over Sean which is not unusual since Qasim is freakishly tall for his age and weight. Sean however did have a weight advantage on the scales that day weighing in 1kg more than The Dream Qasim.

Ding Ding! Round 1 and it was time for the action to commence.
The bout starts with both fighters tight in their defence looking to work out the other man without opening up too much. Sean looks to have a boxers posture and is looking to get close to the taller man and close down his range and reach advantage.
Sean lands first with a hook volley that Qasim catches high on the head but lacked any real power to trouble the home fighter.
This sparks Qasim into life retaliating with a two punch to kick combination that has Sean take heed knowing that he can't be reckless on his attack.
Qasim after the first initial 20 seconds or so of the fight was settling into a nice rhythm using his mid to long range well and picking his shots safely away from Sean's boxing skills.
Qasim then lands the first real meaningful shot of the contest cutting the right straight leg round kick across the mid section of the Irish man that visibly sees him dip and wince in pain.
Qasim has the centre of the ring now in is looking good manoeuvring his man into position looking for his time to let rip. He doesn't have to wait long, Qasim throws a short cobra right hand catching Sean unawares that momentarily sees him disorganised. Qas seeing his opportunity lets off with 6 accurate punches that bounce of the side of the Galway mans head. Qas then fires a right round kick that also finds its target followed by a hard right hand that sends Sean crashing heavily to the canvas. First blood to Qasim 'The Dream'.
Sean looks unorganised and weary as he rises to the count of 9 and is looking to his corner for help having never experiencing being knocked down in his career before this point.
Referee Mike Bellgrave waves the contest on and the action resumes.
Qas moves first again and drops an axe kick that just misses the top of Sean's head but that pulls him right down. He is still very wobbly and has not yet shaken off the effects of the heavy knockdown.
The bell sounds and gives Sean the rest and recovery time that is much needed.

Qasim just misses Sean's head with the axe kick following the knockdown in round 1

Both fighters slug it out wanting to bring home the I.S.K.A British Belt

Ding Ding! Round 2 Qasim again tries establish that long range of picking his man off that proved so successful for him in the 1st round. Qasim clearly the superior kicker is keeping Sean away with his long legs and stopping Sean setting for any of his boxing.
With Sean working out a way of trying to get close Qasim again catches him unawares this time with a lead corkscrew uppercut that twists and lifts Sean's head followed by a solid right hand that once again sends Sean on the short trip to the canvas.
Up this time at the count of 5 Sean does not look as hurt as in the first round and shows the referee that he is eager to continue raising his gloves up the sides of his head.
A convinced referee Bellgrave allows the fight to continue but carry's on the count to 8 as a precaution giving Sean more time to compose himself.
Qasim not rushing in is looking for the gap to mount the next assault and attempts a turning side kick that doesn't land flush but glances of the side of Sean's body.
Sean knowing that he can't contend with Qasim at this range rushes forward again trying to close the USKA man down. The action at this point gets a little scrappy, both fighters missing with Sean frantically trying to land a telling punch and Qasim trying to find a gap to land a counter.
Qasim again changes tactics and goes on a kicking assault throwing long round kicks of both legs to body and head to push Sean back. Seeing Sean of balance Qasim steps in and lands a ridiculously hard left straight leg to the body that literally lifts Sean up off the canvas and sends him down doubled up in pain.
The brave Comiskey gets up again on the count of 7 and cornerman Pete Foley looks on with the towel in hand ready to call off the contest sensing his man was on the verge of getting seriously hurt. His better judgement decided to allow Sean the chance to somehow turn things around and continue and he went with the referees decision to let the fight resume.
Qasim moves forward and tries to finish it landing hard shot after hard shot that somehow Sean manages to stand up to and with heart and determination was still trying to fire back.
The bell sounds with the crowd on their feet knowing they were witnessing a war of wills.

Qasim in control and starting to overwhelm the game but outgunned Irish man

Ding Ding! Round 3 The mid way point in the contest and with Qasim a mile in front due to the three knockdowns it was now make or break for the Galway man. Could he make the changes needed to make a dent in Qasim or would Qasim continue with what had turned out to be somewhat of a demolition job.
Again the brave Sean comes out swinging but Qasim not wanting to give up his advantage covered up taking the shots on his arms and picking his man off with short counter attacks.
Qasim then lands the finishing blows of a hard left uppercut to right hand and Sean crashes down to the deck for the forth and last time in the contest. The towel comes in at the same time that Referee Mike Bellgrave waves it off but in reality there was no way that the brave Irish man was going to make the count to continue.
The fight ended at 17 seconds into the third round and a new British champion crowned in the form of the still undefeated Qasim 'The Dream' Nisar.

And the new I.S.K.A Super Lightweight champion of Great Britain........

Qasim now will challenge for the I.S.K.A European title on 15th April at Dudley Town Hall and if successful will then try to unify the European title by challenging for the Golden Belt European title on 19th May.
There are exciting times ahead for this talented young prospect and his coach and mentor Neil Kelly believes he will go on not only to dominate the Pro rankings but will in time become one of the best fighters that this country has ever produced.
'People are starting to believe in something that I have known for a very long time, Qasim 'The Dream' Nisar is for real and is ready to face all challengers in his weight class. The Champ is most definitely here!'
