IFA KICKBOXING AND KASH THE FLASH GILL'S
OPEN LIGHT CONTINUOUS COMPETITION
SUNDAY 4TH MARCH 2007
CADBURY CLUB, BOURNVILLE, BIRMINGHAM.

Sunday 4th March saw the latest of IFA and
Kash Gill's light continuous shows at the Cadbury club in
Bournville, Birmingham.
We had a healthy interest from fighters wanting to compete
in this one with 17 putting forward their weights from the
USKA gym and turning up to fight.
Mixed feed back on the show on refection.
On a positive, great venue, good organisation, awsome presentation,
excellent referee's, well run starting bang on time and finishing
early.
On the negative, only one round of competition not really
allowing the fighter to get the full ring experience of trying
to alter their game mid fight between rounds if things were
not going their way. One round of fighting also encourages
the brawl with a none stop barrage not having to worry or
concern themselves with any kind of pace.
No head shots encouraging the fighter to not pay any kind
of attention to their defence which in the long run is counter
productive.
A few not so great decisions but in fairness I put this down
to the fact that the fight was only over one round and that
it is harder for the judge to base their opinion over such
a short time. And finally a few mismatches in regard to weight
and size of opposition 9 times out 10 it is the heavier fighter
going forward and as we know already in the majority of cases
it is the forward fighter who 9 times out of 10 gets the decision.
All this said and done you play with the cards you are dealt
and it was on with the competition. Here is a brief run down
of the USKA fighters performances and results.
Reiss Larvin having
to settle for a one round fight against IFA's Reece
Richards. Reece Richards as we have seen before is
a forward fighter that pays little or no attention
to defence or pace and true to previous form it was
same old same old from Mr Richards this time out.
The sharper punching a punch flurries from USKA's
Reiss taking over from his man as he tired to score
the win. Reiss also left his namesake with an example
of why it is not a good idea to steam forward with
your hands down in the final seconds of the bout dropping
him with a straight right hand on the button.
Megan Kelly matched against
an IFA girl that looked a good 15 / 20kg heavier than
her looked a little fazed on the way to the ring but
when the bell rang that all changed. Megz continuing
where she left off in Derby applied forward momentum
and excellent combinations to keep the workrate up
for the duration of the fight. Meg trains so hard
in the gym that her fitness and resolve is never in
question and she was able to not leave any gaps for
her opponent to get any effective pressure of her
own off. Mixing her punches and kicks together well
Meg cruised to victory and continues to improve with
every outing.
Alyesha Farrell was another
USKA fighter who looked to be in a bit of a mismatch
against a girl from UKCBA. The girl in question was
extremely tall for the weight and as there was no
scales at the venue to check it we had to go by what
had been sent to Kash from the girls instructor. Alyesha
was told to get close to the girl and not let her
use her reach.
Alyesha did exactly that and moved forward for the
duration of the fight pushing the big girl back and
limiting the number of shot she could get out.
Although the taller girl was landing good body round
kicks Alyesha was matching her and landing punch combinations
on top to push herself in front.
We thought that coupled with the fact she never took
a backward step for the whole fight against a clearly
heavier opponent would be enough for her to get the
decision.
Unfortunately the scoring referee felt for whatever
reason that the other girl had done enough and had
her hand raised as the winner. A decision that had
more than a few people scratching their heads.
Ridwan Khan matched against
IFA Jnr Black belt Liam Lindsey was in a good fight.
Two fighters that looked equal in skill and throwing
as much as each other but Ridwan clearly having the
better connect rate and you would think scoring rate.
Although tired a clean axe kick to the head from Ridwan
in the last 20 seconds seemed to have sealed the victory
for the USKA fighter but again he fell victim to the
referee's decision that went to Liam Lindsey.
Haris Khan up against
the odds before he even stepped into the ring against
his Welsh opponent due to his interesting training
regime or lack of it should I say.
A lack of fitness, timing and ideas from Haris seen
him on the end of a calculated beating from the young
Welsh fighter who must have thought he had been matched
against a raw novice. Haris will really need to up
his game and get serious about his training if he
is going to make improvements in his competition fighting.
Very disappointing!
Adam Eyaz ran out of
ideas against his Welsh opponent constantly falling
victim to his lead leg side kick and losing his footing.
The Welsh lad fought an intelligent fight keeping
with the same game plan that was working for him to
easily outpoint Adam over the duration.
Stacey Richards giving
away 2 years in age to the aggressive Stevie 'pit
bull' Pitt from Aero-Kick gym performed out of her
skin to push Stevie back for the duration of the contest
to make her taste some of her own medicine. Like most
aggressive fighters they do not know what to do or
how to fight when put on the back foot and this is
exactly what happened when Stacey turned up the heat
on her. Stacey never her gave her time to breath and
Stevie even called for a time out needing a rest after
getting hurt with a body kick near to the end of the
round. A comfortable win for Stacey that incredibly
went the other way in the eyes of the referee. This
was easily the worst decision of the day and a performance
from Stacey that earns her USKA fighter of the day
even in so called 'defeat'
Zak Rehman debuting in
USKA strip looked very good indeed showing excellent
kicking variety and sound boxing skills to outthink
his talented Wolverhampton IFA opponent down the stretch
to win the decision. If this is what Zak has to offer
he is definitely one fighter that USKA should be getting
very excited about. Zak for me was one of the fighters
of the day from the USKA team.
Haroon Khan fighting
a very cautious and measured fight against his UKCBA
opponent used good skills to keep his man at bay landing
at range and then slickly moving out of trouble to
cruise to his win. This made a change from the usual
juniors fight that sees two fighters just stand in
the centre of the ring trading off.
Zain Rafiq was involved
in a close encounter of the IFA kind when he and his
opponent went toe to toe in a battle that had nothing
splitting the two. A final combination of a punch
flurry followed by a head kick seemed to tip the scales
in Zain's favour and gave the referee all he needed
to justify the win to the young USKA fighter.
Jake Richards surprisingly
matched against IFA fighter Zahid Jameel who he will
meet in two weeks time to contest the British Title.
This was to give both fighters an insight to what
the other had to offer and the only worry was that
it was going to be one sided and invalidate the Title
opportunity's credibility. We needn't have worried
though with both lads out to prove a point and impose
their will on the other. A highly charged two round
saw both fighters engage in a high intensity trade
off with the first round relatively even but Jake
stepping up his work and connect rate to take the
second. In a very good fight Jake was awarded the
winner this time but both fighters taking what they
had seen and felt today to work on a strategy that
will hopefully land then the British title in two
weeks time.
Azad Khan easily involved
in his worst performance to date loosing his 7 year
unbeaten record to a fighter he had previously beaten
twice before comfortably in Rafaqit Ali.
Azad's lack of gym hours and sparring caught up with
him with his timing completely shot from the first
ten seconds of the fight. Azad missing with single
shots and being punished on the counter attack with
multiples from Rafaqit was outworked and outgunned
over the two rounds to embarrassingly drop a clear
cut decision. Disappointing to say the least in a
bout that seen Azad hit more times over two rounds
that he probably has been in the 15 fights previous
to this. Azad could not enforce his Wrath and now
must go back to the drawing board and manage his gym
time better if he is not going to suffer more defeats
like this in the future.
Qasim Nisar next matched
against IFA up and coming prospect Rasaqab 'Mr Speedy'
Ali.
Both fighters with full contact experience and confident
of being able to outdo the other.
Round one saw an aggressive forward fighting Rasaqab
living up to his name going forward trying to close
down Qasim's range. Qasim hitting well on the counter
attack but the round ending relatively close.
Take over time! Round two saw Qasim follow his corners
instructions of more head movement and angles to totally
dominate and bewilder Rasaqab and officially steal
his name of Mr speedy hitting him with an incredible
barrage of accurate controlled kicks forcing cornerman
Baggi Singh to throw in the towel.
Another day, another victory to the dreamy one.
Hailey Hanson in her
first fight back in USKA colours looked very sharp
in the first round of her fight against her IFA opponent
using good variety of technique and movement to win
the round emphatically. The second round saw Hailey
tire slightly but still do more than enough to get
the nod from the referee. A good first win back for
Hailey and one that with a little more fitness she
can only improve on.
Mark Sedgwick matched
against a less experienced opponent from Wolverhampton
IFA but one much heavier. Mark scaling at 39kg his
opponent at 57kg.
What can only be described as a master class of control
and technique Mark hit his man with well placed shot
after shot and gave the crowd a demonstration of kicking
ability at it's very very best. Mark proving that
size doesn't
Jay Collett was another
fighter giving away an enormous amount of weight to
his IFA opponent but again had the experience advantage
over his man. Jay looked and felt more than a little
apprehensive as he stood in his corner with this being
his first fight back in quite a while but hit a moved
well clocking up points and landing nice kicks to
stay out of trouble and take the win. First one back
Jay will be looking at building up the confidence
and stepping it up at his next competition.
So a mixed bag for the USKA team this time out with
us finishing the day at 10 wins against 6 loses. It
has to be said though that 3 of those 6 loses without
a shadow of a doubt should have went the other way.
Congratulations to all who turned up to compete and
a big thank you to Kash The Flash Gill and his team
at IFA for on the whole what turned out to be an enjoyable
day.
We apologise
for the fact there is no pictures available from this
event but give you a taster with Qasim 'The Dream'
Nisar's 2nd round demolition job over
IFA's Rasaqab 'Mr Speedy' Ali.
Rumble young man rumble!
